Moment Unforseen

Like a bird lightly perching,
a curious sadness rests on my heart.
From whence it came
I know not
but the trees
in the throes of their late-Fall death
nearly disguise
its small, brown body.
Sideways head tilt
quizzical eyes flit
feathers lightly fluff
repelling the unexpected droplet
from a dangling leaf.
Suddenly
its body freezes in cautious rigidity
head cocked
listening for a faint danger
murmuring in the distance.
I thought it would stay
braving the unknown shadow
but with a sudden hop
it flew off.
Watching
the fluid body,
my straining eyes
lost it in the blur
of Fall’s fading trees .
